Ferries
River Ferries in Campbell County, Campbellton, and throughout Chatt Hills
Before bridges were built to span the Chattahoochee River, a number of ferry crossings were established to connect the communities in this area from the Campbellton town square to County Line.
Some ferries, such as the Pumpkintown Ferry, may have been a continuation of earlier Indian crossing sites and trails, but most others were put into operation during the rapid settlement of the area following the land lotteries of the 1820s. The Georgia Legislature later authorized a few ferries for service after the formation of the Campbell County government. But with rare exception, the ferries were either privately run by the landowners of the crossing sites or by hired operators.
Various maps of this area from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries indicate that there were at least eight significant ferry operations along the Chattahoochee River: Campbellton, Smith’s Pumpkintown, Garrett’s, Capps, Neal’s, Jones (Lower) and Hutcheson. Most remained in operational into the early to mid-twentieth century. The Campbellton Ferry was the last of the old crossing sites. It ceased operation after the Hyw 92 bridge was completed in 1958.
